BURPENGARY NEWSFLASH
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF BURPENGARY STATE SCHOOL
Number 7 14 March 2008
Dear Parents / Caregivers
Welcome to this week’s Newsflash. On Monday night, the P&C Association held its Annual General Meeting for 2008. The 2007 Executive was returned for another twelve months so I extend yours and my congratulations to -
President: Mrs Lyn Roberts
Vice President: Mrs Sue Barry
Secretary: Mrs Michelle Ferriday
Treasurer: Mrs Beth Sullivan
The 2007 Executive did an outstanding job in the management of the Association’s activities and support for the school’s educational programs and facilities improvements. This was reflected in the Auditor’s Report to the Association on the professional management of the Association’s finances.
As Principal, Mrs Passi has very much appreciated the Association’s constructive imput to the school’s management, and the support and co-operation of the Executive, and looks forward to another successful year.
The P&C President’s Report for the year 2007 as presented at the Annual General Meeting on 10 March 2008 is as follows:
In 2007, the P&C Association continued its role as a key stakeholder, supporter, and sponsor within the school. Our P&C is blessed as being financially viable, highly respected, and an interactive P&C. By this, I mean that our P&C works closely with the school administration, key class parents, and the parent base, and that the projects we endorse, support and finance are designed to affect every year level and every student at some stage in their time at the school. The projects chosen to provide are deemed to be the most significant and highest priority in terms of benefit to the general student population. In 2006, the P&C’s primary impact was to support and finance the oval redevelopment. In 2007, the focus changed to shade trees on the oval, water-wise improvement strategies, core business repairs and maintenance, and improving literacy support.
In 2007, the P&C contributions were allocated to the following key school areas:
§ Home Readers for junior school and reading support
§ Shelving for the Curriculum Resource room
§ Re-carpeting the Junior Library
§ Support of the Teacher Relief Scheme
§ Introduction and support of the Uniform Time Purchase Plan
§ Mature shade trees on the oval
§ Concrete pathways
§ Fencing and landscaping
§ Water tanks - Plumbing from buildings and plumbing to transfer tanks
- P&C building tank
Most importantly, the P&C manages the finances of the Tuckshop, the Uniform Shop, and the fundraising activities. I need to thank several people without whose assistance 2007 would not have been as successful as it was.
Firstly to volunteers who put in innumerable hours:
§ Mrs Neeland and assistants for their tireless fundraising schedule
§ Mrs McTaggart and Mrs Lewis in the Uniform Shop
§ Mrs Grzesiczak and the Craft Group who provide a fabulous service to the parents and students
§ The Key Class Parents whose input assists in guiding the P&C
§ All the volunteers who work in the Tuckshop serving and preparing for the students.
Secondly my heart-felt personal thanks to the P&C volunteer committee members who provide a very solid platform:
§ Mrs Michelle Ferriday (Secretary)
§ Mrs Beth Sullivan (Treasurer)
§ Mrs Sue Barry (Vice President).
And lastly, my sincerest thanks to those parents who regularly attend meetings and provide input and consider the things that matter most to parents and students. Of note, I would like to thank Mr Nixon, Mr O’Brien and Mr Wallis. 2007 has seen the fruition and consolidation of the long term oval dream and I thank the parents, students, volunteers, and school staff for their invaluable time, effort and input.
Personally, throughout the year, I was privileged to attend the annual concert, the school council, key class parent meetings, and the 2007 student investiture. I have taken great pleasure in seeing the wonderful time many of the students have at the discos, buying presents for Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days, or the success they achieve in the Spell-a-thon. I encourage every parent to participate and ‘belong’ to our school Parents and Citizens Association. Lyn Roberts, President 2007
To other news …
1. The school is still requiring one (1) parent nomination to the new Council. Nominations close at 3.30pm today. Nominations are to be addressed to The Returning Officer, Ms L. Mellers.
2. On Wednesday afternoon, we held our first Parent Forum for the year. A sizable number of parents, caregivers and even grandparents attended to hear Mr Ruhle speak about Reading. Mr Ruhle discussed the purpose of reading i.e. to understand what is written by the author, reading behaviours and understandings of young children, how to support a child reading a new book, aspects of the school phonic program and appropriate strategies for decoding unknown words. Some of those who attended the forum were new to the school and others were seasoned attendees at previous Parent Forums. However, feedback from parents indicated that they all felt their attendance was worthwhile. Parents said that the forum ensured they are better informed when reading with their children.
Don’t forget to read future Newsletters for upcoming details of Parent Forums. Should you have a topic which you believe would be of interest to parents, please speak with your child’s teacher or the Key Class Parents.
3. The Key Class Parent group will meet on Wednesday 19 in the Staff Lounge. Key Class Parents are a group within the P&C Association who perform a number of important functions. Firstly, they are a group of parents who are very knowledgeable about the school’s practices, policies and procedures, so they can help other parents with queries and background information to decisions made by the school. Secondly, parents can bring their concerns to a Key Class Parent so that it can be raised directly with the Principal at the monthly meeting. It allows the school’s Administration to act in a timely and appropriate manner and at times, Mrs Passi will use the newsletter to explain more fully a situation that may be causing parental concern. Thirdly, the Key Class Parents have an educational role for parents as they recommend topics for Parent Forums to help build parent/carer knowledge. This strengthens the home-school partnership.
4. The Year 4 Swimming program begins immediately following the Easter holidays from Tuesday 25 March until Friday 4 April inclusively. Forms and payment are due in no later than next Tuesday 18 March. As parent helpers are required for each swimming group we would be grateful for your assistance. Please advise the office if you are able to help.
5. Cross Country events are also on our sports calendar with the Years 6/7 event to be held on Wednesday 2 April from 1.30 - 3.00pm, and the Years 4/5 race scheduled for Thursday 3 April from 1.30 - 3.00pm. All permission notes are due in by Wednesday 19 March. A reminder that full Sports Uniform must be worn by all competitors.
6. The Instrumental Music and Strings Program have both made a success of developing their skills with the Senior Band practising on both Tuesday and Thursday this term. In Term 2 these will be held on Friday only in order to allow our new players to form a Junior Band to practise every Tuesday. This week, the Stage Band enjoyed a short practise session during their afternoon tea break. The String Ensemble has also been working diligently during their Monday morning lessons. All players are working to further develop their playing skills. Well done!
7. Once again in 2008, your children have the opportunity to pit their skills in various subject areas against students across Australia. This year the range of tests including Science, Writing, Mathematics and English will occur in Term 2 and 3.
